WHO ARE WE?

The national organizations represented here today are a coalition of students with disabilities, our parents/family members, and activists who are all concerned about preserving civil rights, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), for students with disabilities.

WHY ARE WE HERE?

Clearly, students with disabilities are not getting the education and training we need to succeed! And yet, as Congress works on reauthorizing I.D.E.A, the main piece of education legislation for students with disabilities, they are stripping us of our right to equal education rather than enforcing it.

The House of Representatives recently passed a bill, HR 1350, that we believe will drastically limit student's civil rights, school accountability, and will LEAVE BEHIND millions of students with disabilities!

WHAT DO WE WANT?

As students, parents, teachers, activists and citizens, we are here today to send a united message to the Senate that we will not tolerate any weakening of the civil rights of students with disabilities in this country.

We are calling on the members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to:

  1. Reject the discriminatory provisions contained in HR 1350 and
  2. Take the leadership in crafting a bill that enforces the right to equal education for students with disabilities
