WASHINGTON, DC, - THE American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) has announced the formation of a unique strategic partnership with Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU) of Marlborough, Massachusetts. This partnership will enhance AAPD's goal of achieving economic empowerment for all Americans with disabilities by offering needed, affordable financial services broadly and conveniently available to members of the disability community, their families, friends and supporters.

AAPD believes that access to financial products and services to the more than 56 million Americans with disabilities, particularly for loans, has often been difficult. This problem has grown worse with the recent economic slowdown. When these products and services are available, they are often priced at a severe disadvantage for people with modest means.

People with disabilities often need expensive specialized equipment and services. Lack of financial options to make these purchases affordable represents a barrier to the disability community's goals of full inclusion in society, equal access to employment and economic self-sufficiency.

Now, through its partnership with AAPD, DCU has demonstrated its willingness to help break down that barrier. DCU is making available its full range of financial services for all AAPD members nationwide. This includes not only loans, but also checking accounts, savings accounts and 24-hour electronic access. DCU has introduced a Mobility Loan Program specifically for purchasing adaptive vehicle equipment. In addition, DCU is working on ways to make its services even more accessible to people with disabilities - particularly on the Internet.

"As the mission of AAPD is to economically and politically empower all people with disabilities in the U.S., our recently created partnership with DCU is a crucial benefit that we are now able to extend to our members", reports Andrew J. Imparato, AAPD's President and CEO. "The time when a major financial institution correctly identifies the disability community as a stable and financially sound business market is long overdue. I personally commend DCU for its foresight".

"We are honored that AAPD chose to work with us on this project," stated Tim Garner, DCU's V.P. of Marketing and Strategic Planning. "Our vision as a credit union is that all members achieve financial well-being. As AAPD has shown us, we have a tremendous opportunity to provide affordable services to an important, new community of people who truly need them."

AAPD, by partnering with DCU, is now able to bring to the disability community the opportunity for economic empowerment from a capable financial organization that is actively seeking their business and wants to meet their financial needs.

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is a national membership organization dedicated to promoting the economic and political empowerment of all people with disabilities; educating businesses and the general public about disability issues, and providing membership benefits, such as financial services and product discounts. AAPD was founded in 1995 by a group of cross-disability leaders to help unite the diverse community of people with disabilities, including their family, friends and supporters, and to be a national voice for change in implementing the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act: equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency.
