CSAVR Committee Re-Established

The NAD Rehabilitation Committee was successful in convincing the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation (CSAVR) to re-establish its subcommittee on deafness issues.

The NAD hopes that this subcommittee will help to improve services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing at One Stop Career Centers around the country.

Who can pay for your Hearing Aids?

The NAD is often contacted by families asking why their private insurance does not cover the costs of often-expensive hearing aids. Generally, this is a state-level issue. That is because insurance companies are regulated by states, not by the Federal Government. (This is why the ADA does not impose requirements on insurance carriers.)

However, Medicare and Medicaid are Federal programs. A bill was introduced by Rep. Mark Foley (Republican of Florida) on September 21, 2001. If passed by the House and if a similar version passes the Senate this year, prior to adjournment, the bill would provide Medicare coverage of hearing aids and related services. The bill does not affect Medicaid.
