HARKIN ANNOUNCES BOOST FOR INFORMATION AND TRAINING FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITES

Contact: Maureen Knightly/Jen CarrierWASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Parent Training and Information Center of Iowa (PTI of Iowa) will receive a than $226,000 grant from the U.S Department of Education. The grant will help PTI of Iowa provide training and information to parents of children who have disabilities, focusing on those families who have been underserved.
“It is critical that all members of our society have equal opportunities, including those who may have a disability,” Harkin said. “This grant will increase awareness and knowledge of education and health care issues among parents, community members, and those professionals serving children who have a disability.”
The PTI of Iowa will use the grant to provide one-to-one problem solving, training and direct advocacy in school and health care issues. Information will be available in a variety of methods, including an accessible Web site, mailings, a quarterly newsletter and other materials in varying formats, such as CDs and videos, and in other languages.
Harkin was the chief sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA’s goals are equal opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency for all individuals with disabilities.
