Harkin Praises Senate Action to Stop Medicaid Cuts
March, 2005
“I am pleased that the Senate voted on a bipartisan basis to protect the access to health coverage for millions of Americans. Unfortunately, these harmful cuts were approved by the House of Representatives, and touted by the House Republican leadership. I hope that the House will work with us in the Senate to ensure that we will not shift this important responsibility to the states.
“With nearly 300,000 Medicaid beneficiaries in Iowa, virtually all affected are low-income children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. The vote today is a signal to the president that our most disadvantaged and vulnerable citizens should not bear the brunt of budget cuts in order to give new tax giveaways wealthy. The president’s priorities are the wrong priorities, and they certainly don’t reflect Iowa values.”
