SHARE YOUR STORY TO PROTECT THE FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT
August, 2005

Action Needed!

If you have not taken family and medical leave, you most likely know someone who has. Since 1993, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) has helped more than 50 million Americans take job-protected, unpaid leave to care for a seriously ill family member, a new child, or for their own illness. It is the only national legislation of its kind. Now, the FMLA is currently threatened by the very groups that fought against the original passage of the legislation. They are exerting strong pressure on the Department of Labor (DOL) to make broad, sweeping changes to the law. FMLA opponents are pushing to rollback the definition of a “serious health condition” and “intermittent leave,” which will adversely affect millions of employees by limiting the illnesses for which employees may take leave and forcing many to take more unpaid leave than they need. It is critical for the DOL, Congress, and the general public to hear the voices of those who have benefited from this important legislation.

AAPD has joined a large and growing coalition of over 200 national organizations working to protect the FMLA. Among other projects, AAPD is helping to collect stories of people who have taken FMLA leave to illustrate the necessity and soundness of the law. If you have taken FMLA leave, please contact Taylor Hatcher, National Partnership for Women & Families: taylorh@nationalpartnership.org or call (202) 986-2600 to share your story to protect the FMLA.
