PRETORIA, South Africa—A blind South African man is appealing to his country's highest court to set aside a decision that he is incapable of taking care of his three children.
The children were removed from his home after his wife died following a long battle with cancer, The Pretoria News reported Monday.
The paper says the man's identity is being withheld to protect the children.
Blindness was one of the main reasons social workers placed his 8-month-old baby and two stepchildren with relatives. His attorney said another reason was his lack of sufficient financial resources.
South Africa's National Council for the Blind is aiding the man's appeal. Executive Director Jill Wagner says the organization wants a precedent set that blindness is not a reason to deny a parent access to his or her children.
