International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM) Report for the Americas
July 2004

The Center for International Rehabilitation is pleased to announce it has recently completed the International Disability Rights Monitor(IDRM) Report for the Americas and plans to release the results on Tuesday, August 24, during the fourth meeting of the UN Ad Hoc Committee on Rights for People with Disabilities. The IDRM is an annual report whose objective is to document the progress, problems and barriers encountered by people with disabilities internationally. The IDRM is a ground-breaking initiative of the Center for International Rehabilitation, a Chicago-based non-governmental organization with offices in Washington DC and several countries around the world.

The IDRM report for the Americas documents the state of human rights of people with disabilities in the 24 countries on both continents and will be distributed on August 24 both in English and Spanish among governmental and nongovernmental organizations, the media, and the UN system. An online database will guarantee that the information is easily accessible to all interested parties.

The goal of the IDRM is to promote the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in society and advocate for greater compliance with international human rights laws, so as to ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are enforced and protected. The project consists of training researchers, collecting data on disability-related issues, and analyzing and disseminating the data gathered.

The Center for International Rehabilitation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that develops rehabilitation programs, artificial limbs, wheelchairs and educational materials to improve the lives of people with disabilities in some of the poorest countries on earth. Founded in 1996 by Dr. William Kennedy Smith and based in Chicago, the CIR operates in collaboration with the renowned Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University.
