CHRISTOPHER REEVE WILL SALUTE ITALY FOR ITS WORK ON U.N. PROGRAMME OF ACTION CONCERNING DISABLED PERSONS

Italy's President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi will accept the seventh Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award on behalf of his country at a ceremony at the UN on Monday, November, 17th. World-famous disability rights advocate Christopher Reeve will participate in the ceremony.

WHO: Italy's President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi will accept the Award. Other prominent speakers include: H.E. Julian R. Hunte, President of the UN General Assembly; Christopher Reeve, Vice Chairman of the National Organization on Disability; David A. Roosevelt, Great-Grandson of FDR and Trustee of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute; Ambassador William vanden Heuvel, Co-Chair of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute; Alan A. Reich, Chairman, World Committee on Disability; and Kenneth Behring, Founder and Chairman, The Wheelchair Foundation.

WHAT: The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute and the World Committee on Disability will honor Italy with the seventh annual Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award for its progress toward the goal of the UN World Programme of Action Concerning Disabled Persons - the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in the life of their countries. The Award includes a bust of FDR, $50,000 for an outstanding disability program in Italy, and 1,000 wheelchairs for people with mobility impairments in Italy. Past recipients are the Republic of Korea, Canada, Ireland, Hungary, Thailand, and Ecuador.

WHY: To recognize Italy's exemplary efforts to improve the lives of people with disabilities, as called for by the UN World Programme of Action Concerning Disabled Persons.

WHEN: Monday, November 17th, 2003 at 11:00 a.m.

WHERE: Ceremony to be held in the ECOSOC Chamber, the UN Building. Enter through the visitor's entrance at 1st Avenue and 46th Street.
