Comparative Trends in the Use of Technology for Voting

The sample size during three surveys is 1,000 US adults (18 years old and above). This sample size results in a sampling error margin of +/- 3%. Opinion Research Corporation of Princeton, NJ conducted the telephone survey on January 12 - 15, 2006. The chart above shows the high-level tracking results during that survey.

  • Sixty-eight percent (68%) of the respondents expressed positive trust ratings for DREs, while sixteen (16%) expressed negative trust ratings for DREs. Among the four voting technologies available, DREs and precinct optical scan devices are the clear favorite across the country.

  • Sixty-one percent (61%) of the respondents expressed positive trust for in-precinct county optical scan voting. (That number is statistically significant and lower than the DRE rating of 68% because it falls outside the 3% sampling error range.) Seventeen percent (17%) of the respondents expressed negative trust of precinct-count optical scan voting.

  • Vote By Mail continued its steady, upward move. It now receives positive trust ratings from 38% of the respondents and negative trust ratings from 36%. This is the first time in our survey that VBMs positive ratings have surpassed its negative ratings.

  • Internet voting still holds a distant fourth position. Thirty percent (30%) of the responded expressed positive trust of Internet voting while 46% Of the respondents went the other direction.
