Edwards Supports Coelho Agenda for Disability Rights and Employment Senator John Edwards (D-NC) today expressed his commitment to achieve the goals in the Coelho Challenge.

"We're a nation where every person has equal value and every dream deserves an equal chance. Too often, Americans with disabilities can't reach their potential because our laws and policies leave unnecessary obstacles in their way. I am absolutely committed to lifting those obstacles by making appointments, drafting laws, and implementing executive policies that honor the equal rights and equal dignity of every American with disabilities. That is why I am proud to support all five of the principles in Tony Coelho's Challenge. Tony has been a great leader and visionary in the battle for equal justice for Americans with disabilities, and his challenge says just where we need to go in order to achieve equal job opportunities for the one in five Americans with a disability."

The Coelho Challenge includes five planks: appoint federal judges who will respect the Americans with Disabilities Act; reverse the damage to the ADA by recent Supreme Court caselaw; boost employment for people with disabilities through changes in federal contracting and small business policies; increase federal employment of people with disabilities by 100,000 as required under the Executive Order promulgated by President Clinton; and, change federal policies to encourage rather than punish work.

Edwards' support for the Coelho challenge builds on his Agenda for Americans with Disabilities.
