Senator Kerry Commemorates National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 14, 2004
Washington, DC -- All of us--whether we are in the public or private sector--must make the employment of individuals with disabilities a priority, said Senator John Kerry in recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
For Americans with disabilities, employment is the means to achieving the fundamental promises held in the Americans with Disabilities Act: Inclusion, Independence and Empowerment. Yet, despite the ADA, 70 percent of persons with severe disabilities remain unemployed.
The unemployment rate for persons with disabilities is appalling. We should all be outraged by these figures. There isn't anyone I know who hasn't been touched by disability--themselves, or a family member or friend, professional colleague or member of their community, stated John Kerry.
As president, Kerry added, I will reinstate the Executive Order by President Clinton to hire 100,000 qualified individuals with disabilities as federal employees over five years. Further, my administration will promote the employment of individuals with disabilities, and also hold accountable those agencies responsible for ensuring employment for people with disabilities.
Senator Kerry has detailed a plan for ensuring freedom, independence, and choices for people with disabilities. It includes solutions for employment, health care, community living, civil rights enforcement, education, transportation, technology, and housing.
