Knowing Who Needs Inclusive Communications Technologies

Reducing the Divide: Web Site Accessibility
It is easy to overlook a key aspect of the Internet — that websites themselves must be accessible and usable by people with disabilities. Key components of good design include:

  • Content designed for the greatest number of users.

  • Availability of accessible Web browsers and media players and other "user agents" that interact with the pages.

  • Availability of assistive technology such as screen readers, alternative keyboards, switches and scanning software, typically used by people with vision disabilities.

  • Consideration of users' knowledge, experiences and adaptive strategies when they use the Web.

  • Awareness of accessibility concerns and issues by designers, coders, authors, and others who contribute content.
