Happy Valentine’s Day!

February 14, 2013  |  Jennah Bedrosian

Today is the day of love and though I’m looking forward to sharing today with my very special someone, I always like to remember that only I am responsible for my own happiness. One of my favorite quotes speaks to this exact sentiment.

Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. - Veronica A. Shoffstall

Without meaning to be too Hallmarky- It reminds me that we are all deserving of all the goodness and happiness we see fit to make for ourselves, regardless of ability. Though, it is difficult to be fully happy when you are denied employment because of your disability, segregated from society in an institution because of the way you were born, or bullied because of the way you look.

Sometimes it may seem like the road to full equality is a long one. Fighting every day for equality in the workplace, in our communities, in our schools, and within our laws, for me, reinforces the belief that we are just as deserving of equality as everyone else. Asking someone to grant us civil rights implies they are theirs to give.  We must plant our own freedom and decorate our world how we see fit, instead of waiting for someone to grant us equality. We cannot allow anyone else to deny what we know to be inherently ours.

So as you celebrate today, remember to love yourself, because you are deserving and perfect just the way you are.
