How to be a part of positive change

February 5, 2013  |  Suheil Thadani

My name is Suheil Thadani and I just started working as a Development Intern here at AAPD. I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, but am of Indian heritage. I moved to the United States three years ago, to go to school at the George Washington University; where I’m studying Marketing and Psychology. I’ve worked in sales positions at AFLAC and have done administrative and prospecting work for the GWU Law School Office of Alumni Relations. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have studied the various steps of the sales cycle, psychology involving consumer behavior and theories of personality, advertising, relationship marketing, accounting, and business law and ethics. In my spare time I enjoy playing the guitar and writing slam poetry. I am also a passionate world traveler and love to explore new cities and corners of the earth.

I first heard about AAPD through my friend Christine (she’s also an intern here) and when I walked in to interview, I was blown away by the kind, welcoming, and close-knit atmosphere I discovered. Every employee here has made me feel so welcome and at home. I really look forward to contributing in any way I can!

As the new Development Intern, I am working with our Vice President of Development to plan for our Leadership Awards Gala. I am helping him facilitate the organization of the gala, as well as communicate with potential speakers, VIP’s, and donors. I am very excited for this event and cannot wait to meet more members and advocates of the community.

I will also be working closely with our Major Gifts Officer, Zeenia. I will help her maintain contact with our major gifts donors and other potential partners. Because of these donations, AAPD is able to provide valuable employment programs for people with disabilities. Funding for these programs directly impacts our community. Through our annual Summer Internship Program, Disability Mentoring Day, Disability Equality Index, and our annual Hearne Awards we empower people with disabilities and help advocate for equal opportunity, economic power, independent living, and political participation for the disability community.
