Mark's Weekly Message

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years as an advocate, it’s this: they’ll never give you what you don't ask for.

That’s why we and a coalition of disability rights organizations asked the presidential candidates to explain their positions on policy priorities, including employment opportunity, education, health care, education, and accessibility. You can read the full questionnaire here.

It’s particularly important that we know whether candidates support a proposed rule implementing § 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, which promotes equal employment opportunity in companies that receive federal contracts.  As I have written before, it is a GAME CHANGER.  When it’s implemented, it will affect over 22% of the U.S. workforce.

President Obama’s completed questionnaire reaffirmed his support for the proposed rule.  The President stated that the rule “would strengthen Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, reduce unemployment among Americans with disabilities, and help federal contractors fulfill their legal obligations to hire qualified workers with disabilities.  This rule, when finalized, will have a positive impact on the employment of persons with disabilities.” You can read the President’s response to our questionnaire here.

Governor Romney’s campaign has not yet responded to our community’s questions.  That means that we don’t know where he stands on many of the issues that matter to us.

Contact the Romney campaign and tell them to answer our community’s questions. You can reach them at:

Then direct them to our questionnaire here.

Have a great weekend.

As a disabled freelance writer, I am interested in where you stand on implementing #503 of the Rehabilitation Act. I am also interested in where you stand on funding for transitioning special needs highschool students into the work force. Please consider that one in 5 persons in the US is disabled and one in 6 in the US has a mental illness. Many of these people have caregivers. Pay attention to them.

You are right. They never give you what you don't ask for. As Houston mayor's Disability Advocate of the Year in 2010, I do a lot of asking. Most recent asking is to promote a non-profit pocket book I wrote to aid volunteer first responders in helping persons with disabilities. None of the emergency groups will let me mention it on line as that appears to be selling it. Gosh!@ I did it for free and I have been a published author for money for many years. There's a plug in information here.
