Next Tuesday AAPD launches Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) in New York City, in partnership with the New York Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD). DMD offers a space and an opportunity for young people with disabilities to experience work first hand, to get that first bite of the American dream, and the chance to understand the pride that comes from an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.
For many DMD participants this might be the first time they are asked what they want to do when they grow up, what path they want to take in their career, and offer the pathway from dreams to success.
This year, in honor of former commissioner Matthew Sapolin, AAPD has chosen New York City and the New York Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) for the 2012 DMD National Launch, celebrating Matt’s legacy as we continue our efforts to promote disability employment awareness.
Not only is DMD about opening the doors to success to the next generation, it’s about creating and nurturing strong partnerships with employers. The night before the DMD launch, we will be working directly with our sponsors to help employers learn more about the true, untapped potential of people with disabilities in the American Work Force. Marsh & McLennan is generously hosting a seminar that will feature executives from companies like Merck, Highmark, Starr Companies, The Bronx Independent Living Center, and Bender Consulting to promote this important program.
Mentors and mentees will also hear from Ted Kennedy Jr. As a person with a disability and a member of AAPD’s Board of Directors, Ted Jr.’s leadership on disability is second to none. In fact, he just penned an opinion piece in Politico, which you can read here.
It promises to be a great few days for both employers and for young people with disabilities who will soon enter the work force. Follow me on twitter for live updates this week. @AAPD_CEO
