Mark's Weekly Message

February 1, 2013  |  Mark Perriello

Imagine yourself escorted against your will- hands bound, feet shackled- to a dark room. You are strapped to a medical exam table, electrocuted, and left in isolation hour after hour. You have done nothing wrong, but your captors will not listen to your pleas for mercy and your government sits silently as your torture continues.

These horrifying scenarios are real, but I’m not describing the treatment of enemy combatants or detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Actually, this torture is happening to innocent, young American boys and girls at the Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) in Canton, Massachusetts. This is happening legally in the United States.

The JRC describes itself as, “A special needs school”, serving ages 3-adult. For 41 years, the JRC has electronically tortured toddlers, children, and adults with disabilities. Many have reported permanent scars, burns, numbness, extreme pain, and lasting psychological repercussions. The JRC claims they use electric shock, as a method of “behavioral modification.”

AAPD, in a coalition effort with the other disability organizations, is fighting to stop this cruelty. In America we expect freedom from persecution, and no one should suffer at the hands of such government sanctioned abuse.

At this very moment, there is a boy or girl scared and alone, who needs us to speak truth to power.  As decent human beings, our silence is tantamount to acquiescence. Write to the FDA and demand an end to this abuse.

This should not be happening, we have too many medical Frankensteins. Please do something immediately to get this stopped. They wouldn't allow this to be done to criminals. Medical people seem often to be intrested in making money and not much into healing. Remember when they use to do insulin shock treatments and lobotomies? Not to be done without a patients INFORMED consent.

I will write to the fda. Do you help parents who are so tired and over worked that they yell at the kids even though they know it is affecting the kids
