Victory!

October 26, 2012  |  Mark Perriello

Monday was a big deal for the disability community and anyone who supports our equality.

Earlier this week, the disability community achieved a major victory. Through aggressive grassroots action by organizers with ADAPT and others, focused efforts by disability leaders in Washington State, and through strategic grasstops efforts by AAPD and allied leaders, the Governor of Washington State, Christine Gregiore, decided not to appeal MR v. Dreyfus to the Supreme Court of the United States.

If the Governor was successful at the Supreme Court, she would have undermined the rights of people with disabilities to live independently in their communities. Her success would have affected not only those in Washington, but everyone across the country. A successful outcome for the Governor would have reversed Olmstead v. L.C., which ruled that institutionalization is a form of discrimination against people with disabilities.

We flexed our collective muscles, and prevented her from moving forward. Make no mistake - this is our victory.

Now help us continue the momentum.

Your chance to participate is on Election Day- Tuesday, November 6th. Depending on where you live, you may be able to vote already. Take advantage of early voting if it is offered in your state. It helps your chosen candidates get one more step closer to victory.

Our strength is our numbers and the choice to participate is yours.

We swayed a sitting Governor, but there is so much more work to be done. Help us continue to create real victories.
