February 1, 2012 | AAPD Press Team
WASHINGTON, DC -- February 1, 2012 -- In response to an announcement that Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, will perform the National Anthem and America the Beautiful in American Sign Language (ASL) at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012, AAPD President and CEO issued the following statement:
“AAPD applauds PepsiCo, the National Association of the Deaf, and the National Football League for choosing an American Sign Language performance of the Star-Spangled Banner and America, the Beautiful at Superbowl XLVI. Americans of all backgrounds and all walks of life gather to watch the Superbowl. No matter who we’re cheering for, all of us take pride in our national songs. Performing them is a great honor that has been shared by top performers from Wynton Marsalis to Beyonce Knowles. This year’s American Sign Language performance is a powerful expression of our national pride and the diversity of America. For Americans with disabilities and our families and supporters, this performance is a signal of progress.”
