About The New Program

AAPD is creating a new program. The goal is to help people explore their experience related to their condition or changing body or mind. Through this program, people can learn about different systems out in the world – such as healthcare, employment, and technology. They can see how these systems contribute to the problems they face every day.

Maybe these problems include experiences you have at the doctor’s office, challenges you have living independently, or feelings that you’re stuck in a system that wasn’t built for you. This program will teach you about the impact these different systems have on our lives. We want to provide the tools and space to process what you can do to make things easier — for yourself and for others.

To help us build this program, we want to learn what kind of information or support is most helpful for the broader community.

Our Community Input Survey and Focus Groups will help us learn from our community what resources or information would be supportive. Help us make this program happen by sharing your experiences with us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Open the drop downs for answers to these frequently asked questions.

Who can participate in the survey?

The survey is open to all people 18 and over with long-term conditions that impact them, regardless of how you identify. If you aren’t sure if your experience “counts” you may be exactly who we want to hear from!

How long does the survey take?

About 10 to 15 minutes.

What if I need help with the survey?

You can call 202-521-4316 for assistance or email learning@aapd.com.

Is the survey paid?

The survey is not paid. We encourage people to also sign up for the focus groups which are paid.

Who can participate in the focus groups?

We are looking for people who aren’t currently engaged with AAPD’s work to participate. We especially want people who don’t identify as disabled but have long term conditions that impact them to participate.

The focus groups include the following subgroups of people with long-term conditions or aging or changing bodies and minds:

  • Black/African American
  • Asian American/Pacific Islander
  • Latine
  • Formerly incarcerated
  • Immigrants/migrants/refugees (in English or Spanish)
  • Trauma-related conditions
  • Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
How long are the focus groups?

The focus groups will be 90 minutes long.

Will the focus groups be in-person or over Zoom?

Almost all of the focus groups will be held over Zoom. We will host one focus group for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in-person in our office in Washington, D.C.

Are the focus groups paid?

Yes, participants will receive a $100 gift card.

If I am interested in a focus group, will I definitely be selected?

Sharing interest in the focus group does not guarantee you will be selected. We will follow up directly with candidates to confirm you are a good fit for the focus group.

I have been involved with AAPD in the past. Am I a good person to fill out the survey or participate in the focus groups?

We are so happy to have you as a part of our community! The goal of the survey and focus groups is to hear from people we haven’t engaged with before or as much. This includes people who don’t identify as disabled. We encourage those who are close friends of AAPD to help us promote the survey and focus groups with those in your networks.
